- Spring Update
- Many memberships are expiring in April, May and June. This trimester is a great time for volunteering. So it is natural that many of us joined the council during this period. Please check your membership status and expiration date!

- Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Professional Development Workshop for
Artists
- Southside Virginia Council of the Arts (SVCA) and Virginia State University will
sponsor “Professional Practices for the Visual Arts” on Saturday, April 11 at the
Colson Auditorium in Harris Hall on the VSU campus. This workshop is devoted to
the needs and concerns of the individual artist and art student. Topics to be
covered include: photographing artwork, funding opportunities, developing
professional relationships with galleries and publications, copyright issues,
marketing on the web, grant-writing proposals, and writing an effective artist's
statement.
The workshop instructors will be Jeffrey W. Allison and Laura Parsons. Jeffrey W.
Allison is the Paul Mellon Collection Educator at The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
(VMFA) and a professional photographer. He holds a BA in photography and film
from Virginia Intermont College and an MFA in photography from VCU. He
currently teaches Advanced and Intermediate Photography at the VMFA Studio
School and has taught for over twenty-five years at institutions across the
Commonwealth. Laura Parsons is art editor for The Hook, a contributing editor to
Virginia Living magazine, overseeing its art page, works as an acquisitions editor
for Westview Press, and serves as editor of Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine. She
holds a BA from Carleton College and an MA from the University of Virginia.
The workshop registration begins at 9:30AM and the workshops begin at
10:00AM. There are a total of three workshops. Each workshop is only $15 or $40
for all three. The workshop is free to VSU students. For more information and to

- In May keep a look out for the Halifax Jazz Festival
The annual Juneteenth Celebration is scheduled for 19 June
In July, An intercultural forum is being developed for the last week of July.
The annual SVCA Writer's competition will be held in August.
